Pedotransfer functions to estimate proctor test parameters under different tillage systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Álvarez,Carina Rosa; Micucci,Federico Guillermo; Bustingorri,Carolina; Taboada,Miguel Angel.
The Proctor test is time-consuming and requires sampling of several kilograms of soil. Proctor test parameters were predicted in Mollisols, Entisols and Vertisols of the Pampean region of Argentina under different management systems. They were estimated from a minimum number of readily available soil properties (soil texture, total organic C) and management (training data set; n = 73). The results were used to generate a soil compaction susceptibility model, which was subsequently validated using a second group of independent data (test data set; n = 24). Soil maximum bulk density was estimated as follows: Maximum bulk density (Mg m-3) = 1.4756 - 0.00599 total organic C (g kg-1) + 0.0000275 sand (g kg-1) + 0.0539 management. Management was equal to 0 for...

Andreolla,Veruschka Rocha Medeiros; Moraes,Aníbal de; Bonini,Andreia Kusumota; Deiss,Leonardo; Sandini,Itacir Eloi.
Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) can promote higher grain and meat/milk yield as well as reduce soil degradation risks. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of grazing sheep with moderate intensity and nitrogen doses on soil physical attributes, and bean crop yield (Phaseolus vulgaris Lam.) under rotation with summer corn crop (Zea mays Lam.) and winter pasture with oats (Avena sativa Lam) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) The experimental design was completely randomized blocks with split-plot; the plots were nitrogen doses and the split-plots were grazing presence or absence. The treatments were nitrogen doses of 0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1 applied on ryegrass and white oat pasture in winter followed by bean crop. Soil density,...

SOYBEAN AGRONOMIC PERFORMANCE AND SOIL PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES UNDER TRACTOR TRAFFIC INTENSITIES REA
Arcoverde,Sálvio N. S.; Souza,Cristiano M. A. de; Rafull,Leidy Z. L.; Cortez,Jorge W.; Orlando,Roberto C..
ABSTRACT Machinery traffic intensification has been recurrent in intensive agriculture in annual crops, which may lead to structural soil degradation and, consequently, a reduction of its productive capacity. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the influence of tractor traffic intensification on soil physical attributes and soybean yield components. The study was performed in an Oxisol under no-tillage for 10 years, using a randomized block design with five tractor traffic intensities (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 passes) and five replications. Density, porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, and penetration resistance were assessed in the soil and stem diameter, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, grain weight per plant, thousand-grain weight,...

Soil structural quality degradation by the increase in grazing intensity in integrated crop-livestock system Bragantia
Auler,André Carlos; Galetto,Shivelly Los; Hennipman,Fabrício Siqueira; Guntzel,Eduardo Daniel; Giarola,Neyde Fabíola; Fonseca,Adriel Ferreira da.
ABSTRACT The intensification of soil use, as in integrated croplivestock system (ICLS), might promote soil structural degradation. A field method to evaluate the soil structural quality is the Visual Evaluation of Soil Structure (VESS). Studies on the application of this method to ICLS are few. This work aimed to evaluate the structural quality of a Dystrudept under ICLS and different grazing intensities through VESS. Thus, the soil structure was evaluated in light grazing (LG) and heavy grazing (HG) in comparison to a neighboring native forest (NF) as reference area. After the grazing period, 10 trenches were dug in each area to collect soil monoliths. The identification of structural differences and the attribution of visual scores were carried out...

Soil resistance to penetration in cotton rows and interrows AGRIAMBI
Baio,Fábio H. R.; Scarpin,Igor M.; Roque,Cassiano G.; Neves,Danilo C..
ABSTRACT The soil physical quality is one of the most determinant factors for the development of any crop. This study aimed to assess the sample representativeness in soil resistance to penetration mappings taken in rows and interrows of the cotton crop, under two soil moisture conditions. Thirty control points were sampled in a cotton field of 91 ha. Soil resistance to penetration and soil moisture were measured at these georeferenced points. Regardless of soil moisture, the sampling position of soil resistance to penetration is indifferent (row, interrow, or in both positions) when the analysed depth is greater than 0.20 m in the cotton crop. The decrease of soil moisture causes the increment of soil resistance to penetration, regardless of the sampling...

Aeration condition of a clayey oxisol under long-term no-tillage Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Betioli Junior,Edner; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Moreira,Wagner Henrique; Ball,Bruce C.; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Giarola,Neyde Fabíola Balarezo.
The hypothesis of this study was that the absence of soil tillage in long-term no-tillage (NT) systems can be detrimental to soil aeration. The objective was to assess the aeration condition of an Oxisol (Rhodic Ferrasol), very clayey texture (750 g kg-1 of clay; 200 g kg-1 of sand), after 30 years of cultivation under NT. The physical property soil air permeability (Ka) is sensitive to changes in the soil pore system. Aside from Ka, the air-filled porosity (ε a) and indices of pore continuity (K1 and N), derived from the relationship between Ka and εa, were used as indices of soil aeration. From the soil layers 0.0-0.1 and 0.1-0.2 m, 240 undisturbed samples were collected along a transect perpendicular to the crop rows, at three sampling positions: corn...

Bezerra,Raphaela R.; Silva,Ênio F. de F. e; Siqueira,Glécio M.; Dantas,Daniel da C.; Almeida,Brivaldo G. de; Silva,Alexsandro O. da.
ABSTRACT The impacts of agricultural mechanization and soil management on sugarcane activity may compromise the growth of plants. This study aimed to evaluate the initial growth of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) at soil densities under two salinity conditions, associated with the least limiting water range (LLWR), and obtain the critical density for the Spodosol. The treatments consisted of the use of five bulk densities (1.40; 1.50; 1.60; 1.70 and 1.80 Mg m-3) and two conditions of soil salinity (ECse = 0.5 and 3.0 dS m-1). Morphological variables and biomass of sugarcane plants were measured and, simultaneously, undisturbed soil samples were collected in the layers of 0.02-0.08 m to determine the water retention curve, soil resistance to penetration...

Soil physical and biological properties in an integrated crop-livestock system in the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Bonetti,João de Andrade; Paulino,Helder Barbosa; Souza,Edicarlos Damacena de; Carneiro,Marco Aurélio Carbone; Caetano,Jeander Oliveira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the soil physical and biological properties in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS), with or without cattle grazing, in different seasons. The experiment was carried out in the Cerrado biome, in Brazil, in a Rhodic Eutrudox. The treatments consisted of grazing areas (Urochloa ruziziensis) at 0.25, 0.35, and 0.45 m heights (with soybean cultivation after grazing) and of nongrazed areas. The ICLS had no negative effects on soil bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, and microporosity. After ICLS implementation, the values of soil bulk density decreased, and those of soil macroporosity increased, in the grazed and nongrazed areas. However, after three years, bulk density and macroporosity were...

Spatial variability of soil penetration resistance influenced by season of sampling Bragantia
Bonnin,Juan José; Mirás-Avalos,José Manuel; Lanças,Kléber Pereira; González,Antonio Paz; Vieira,Sidney Rosa.
The aim of this work was to analyze the spatial distribution of soil compaction and the influence of soil water content on the resistance to penetration. The latter variable was described by the cone index. The soil at the study site was a Nitisol and the cone index data were obtained using a penetrometer. Soil resistance was assessed at 5 different depths, i.e. 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm, 30-40 cm and deeper than 40 cm, whereas soil water content was measured at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. Soil water conditions varied during the different samplings. Coefficients of variation for cone index ranged from 16.5% to 45.8% while those for soil water content varied from 8.96% to 21.38%. Results suggested a high correlation between soil resistance, as assessed by the...

Soil water retention and s index after crop rotation and chiseling Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Calonego,Juliano Carlos; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Soil compaction can be minimized either mechanically or biologically, using plant species with vigorous root systems. An experiment was carried out with soybean (Glycine max) in rotation with triticale (X Triticosecale) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in fall-winter associated with pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) or sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) in spring. Crop rotation under no-till was compared with mechanical chiseling. The experiment was carried out in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Soil quality was estimated using the S index and soil water retention curves (in the layers of 0-0.05, 0.075-0.125, 0.15-0.20, 0.275-0.325, and 0.475-0.525 m deep). Least limiting water range in soil under crop rotations and chiseling Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Calonego,Juliano Carlos; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Soil water availability to plants is affected by soil compaction and other variables. The Least Limiting Water Range (LLWR) comprises soil physical variables affecting root growth and soil water availability, and can be managed by either mechanical or biological methods. There is evidence that effects of crop rotations could last longer than chiseling, so the objective of this study was to assess the effect of soil chiseling or growing cover crops under no-till (NT) on the LLWR. Crop rotations involving triticale (X Triticosecale) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in the fall-winter associated with millet (Pennisetum glaucum), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) as cover crops preceding soybean (Glycine max) were repeated for three...

RECOVERY OF AN OXISOL DEGRADED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF A HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carvalho,Joseane Carina Borges de; Espindola,Carlos Roberto; Alves,Marlene Cristina; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
ABSTRACT The removal of thick layers of soil under native scrubland (Cerrado) on the right bank of the Paraná River in Selvíria (State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) for construction of the Ilha Solteira Hydroelectric Power Plant caused environmental damage, affecting the revegetation process of the stripped soil. Over the years, various kinds of land use and management systems have been tried, and the aim of this study was to assess the effects of these attempts to restore the structural quality of the soil. The experiment was conducted considering five treatments and thirty replications. The following treatments were applied: stripped soil without anthropic intervention and total absence of plant cover; stripped soil treated with sewage sludge and...
